One of the most devastating events in a parent’s life happened when I heard the diagnosis that my youngest child was going to die. My young son – Davey – was diagnosed with a severe seizure disorder called Lennox-Gestaut syndrome that caused frequent seizures to occur.

Sadly, the disorder ended up by taking his life by the time he was 13 years old. Like a Christmas ornament dropped from the hands of a child, my life had shattered into a million pieces of glass.

As I stared at the tiny glass shards that littered the floor I realized that I would never be able to put my life back together. I picked up one piece at a time to reconnect the shattered parts of me.

Suddenly it all clicked… the events formed the fabric of my experience for many years. His death and my grief can only be expressed as a life shattering experience I’ll never forget.

Gluing me back together took a long time. I continued feeling broken until I was able to finally do the inner rebuilding work that needed to be done… Until I finally made up my mind to reclaim the many parts of me I had left behind when I was simply surviving.
